Enclosed Oak Porch:
How we Enhanced a Shropshire Cottage
Adding a well-designed, well-built, porch to your property will increase its value, internal space and curb appeal. But adding an enclosed oak porch crafted from beautiful, timeless oak really adds that something special to your home and really will turn heads. And that has certainly been the case for the Ford Cottage in Flashbrook, Shropshire.
An Uninviting Mismatch
Our clients got in touch with us when they decided to replace their existing PVC porch with one made from timeless oak. As you can see from the photograph below, their existing PVC porch was out of keeping with their Shropshire sandstone cottage; it was also uninviting, damp and cold.
What We Did
Following an initial design consultation, we developed a porch design based on the client’s brief and budget. They required the porch design to be in keeping with the cottage, to be large enough to house boots and umbrellas, to be dry and draft-free and to allow as much light in to the inner hall as possible.
Their porch was crafted from seasoned English oak and features a canter leaver roof design, providing an overhanging canopy for extra shelter and handmade Tudor-style inner and outer doors. To ensure the porch stays completely dry and warm all year around, we added cavity wall insulation between the inner and outer stone walls — which was laid using lime mortar — roof insulation and electric underfloor heating. The porch features several double-glazed panels to allow the maximum amount of light into the inner porch, was fitted with recessed LED lighting and finished with reclaimed welsh-slate roof tiles. Charming detail was added to this characterful, enclosed oak porch in the form of a traditional hand pull bell and an internal polished-copper rainwater downpipe.
Before & After of the Enclosed Oak Porch
The removal of the existing PVC porch and addition of a beautifully designed and crafted enclosed oak porch, completely changes the external appearance of the property. The oak porch enhances the cottage, giving it the traditional charm and character it was lacking before. And provides a practical, warm, light and airy internal space, whilst dramatically increasing the curb appeal of the property.
This is what the owner of Ford Cottage had to say about our service: ‘Bespoke Oak Structures provided fantastic design ideas along with extremely in-depth technical understanding of the complexities of building in traditional oak materials. The level of detail in the planning and the contract went far beyond any other building contractor we had dealt with in the past. The build, […] is fantastic, exactly to the drawings which Antonio so expertly produced and to the very highest of quality. I would without hesitation recommend him to any future customer…‘ – Tony Bishop, Shropshire.
What Else We Did
In addition to the design and build of the oak porch, this project also included the renovation/restoration of the cottage’s hall, stairs and landing. We fitted a new oak staircase and balustrade, oak ledged doors and casings and laid oak flooring to the landing; stripped back walls to expose historic oak beams and removed, stripped and repaired the floor joists. We also made an arched door and casing for an under-stairs cupboard, re-tiled the hall floor to run seamlessly through to the porch and fitted a 5ft wide skylight to allow light to flood throughout the landing, stairwell and hall.
